Recently, Professor GAI Shili and the Inorganic Functional Materials Application Basic Research team of the Materials Chemistry School of Harbin Engineering University proposed a new strategy to improve the efficacy of cancer photothermal therapy. In the mouse experiment guided by this treatment plan, mice with transplanted 4T1 tumors were irradiated with 808nm laser, and the tumor suppression rate reached as high as 97.45%. This provides an important theoretical basis for the application of nanomaterials in the field of medicine. The relevant results were published in the top chemistry journal “Journal of the American Chemical Society, JACS” under the title of “ETC enhanced photothermal therapy and defect engineering promoted multi-enzyme activity synergistic personalized inhibition of tumor growth”, and were selected as the cover article.

In clinical application, traditional light energy conversion materialsposerisks such as thermal diffusion causing thermal damage to healthy tissues, heatshock reaction exacerbating tumor cell thermal tolerance, non-specific photothermal effects causing biosafety problems, and inadequate efficiency of single therapy. To solve these problems, Professor GAI Shili and her team combined the new weapon in anti-cancer treatment of “nano-enzymes” and introduced a strategy of “interference and collaborative auxiliary treatment of electron transport chain”.

The relevant research results have important guidance for the design and preparation of nanobiomaterials with multiple enzyme catalytic properties, the improvement of the efficacy of tumor photothermal therapy, and other medical applications. They provide strong support for the rapid development of the Materials Science and “Medical Engineering” interdisciplinary studies in the school, and are expected to provide new methods for the treatment of tumors and promote the development of related biomedical materials in China.
